Another Brilliant Decision
by Lee

The Bush administration seems to be doing its damnedest to make sure that I vote Libertarian in 2004.

President Bush gave the go-ahead Wednesday for Mexican trucks to travel U.S. roads beyond commercial border zones where they have been restricted while inspection sites and new regulations were put in place.

The decision comes nearly a year after Bush had said he wanted to allow Mexican trucks on U.S. roads, in compliance with a provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexican trucks and buses won’t be on U.S. highways until the Department of Transportation can review applications from carriers. It must then grant qualifying carriers provisional operating authority.

As anyone who has visited Mexico can tell you, Mexican vehicles and/or drivers are not what we should be alllowing on our roads.  And let’s not even get into the national security implications of allowing loaded trucks from Mexico to come streaming across the border.

Bend Over for the Probe
by Lee

Henry Kissinger has been appointed by President Bush to lead a commision investigating the 9/11 attacks.  After obfuscating the issue for quite some time, this is apparently the administration’s compromise position.  Writing in Slate, Christopher Hitchens’ commentary is right on the money.

There is a tendency, some of it paranoid and disreputable, for the citizens of other countries and cultures to regard President Bush’s “war on terror” as opportunist and even as contrived. I myself don’t take any stock in such propaganda. But can Congress and the media be expected to swallow the appointment of a proven coverup artist, a discredited historian, a busted liar, and a man who is wanted in many jurisdictions for the vilest of offenses?

This is very disappointing.  I mean, an administration that would do this might be inclined to do something goofy like appoint an Iran/Contra criminal to monitor everything private citizens…

Oh.  Sorry.

Left Wing Self Importance
by Lee

Way back on september 15th I blogged on how the left-wing lunatics on the Berkeley City Council, in a grand gesture of overstating their importance in the world, passed a resolution declaring the 60 kilometers of space directly above the city to be a space-based weapon free zone.

Not to be outdone the left-wingers on the city council in Eugene, OR, have passed a resolution opposing the USA Patriot Act.

Like Michael Moore, But Kills Cops
by Lee

A reader named Rick shot me an email earlier regarding the capture of an accused cop killer named Andy McCrae.  It turns out that he’s more than just a simple criminal.  Here’s what the SF Chronicle had to say about it.

Goings-On Up North
by Lee

Canadian reader Larry informed me of this event in the comments section of a post, and I thought it was worthy of an entry all its own.

The top aide to Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien who called President Bush a “moron” resigned on Tuesday, saying the controversy generated by the comment had made her position untenable.

Francoise Ducros, Chretien’s communications director, had been under intense pressure from opposition politicians and the media since making the remark last Wednesday during a conversation with journalists during a NATO summit in Prague.

She first offered her resignation last Friday but Chretien refused to accept it, saying the remarks had been private. But on Tuesday she sent Chretien a letter saying she was quitting.

“It is very apparent to me that the controversy will make it impossible for me to do my job. I would therefore like to leave my position as director of communications immediately,” wrote Ducros, who had been in the post since mid-1999.

Pathetic Elitist Moron
by Lee

A reader has left a comment to one of the posts informing me that a Google search for “pathetic elitist moron” brings up this site as the top entry.  See for yourself.

What does this mean?  Well, people searching for information on Michael Moore will end up here instead.

Why Matt Drudge Rules
by Lee

Only Drudge could come up with something like this.  It’s an essay by then-Senator John Ashcroft.

The Clinton administration would like the Federal government to have the capability to read any international or domestic computer communications. The FBI wants access to decode, digest, and discuss financial transactions, personal e-mail, and proprietary information sent abroad—all in the name of national security. To accomplish this, President Clinton would like government agencies to have the keys for decoding all exported U.S. software and Internet communications.

The protections of the Fourth Amendment are clear. The right to protection from unlawful searches is an indivisible American value. Two hundred years of court decisions have stood in defense of this fundamental right. The state’s interest in effective crime-fighting should never vitiate the citizens’ Bill of Rights.

The administration’s interest in all e-mail is a wholly unhealthy precedent, especially given this administration’s track record on FBI files and IRS snooping. Every medium by which people communicate can be subject to exploitation by those with illegal intentions. Nevertheless, this is no reason to hand Big Brother the keys to unlock our e-mail diaries, open our ATM records, read our medical records, or translate our international communications.

What a difference a job title makes, huh?  It’s truly a shame that Ashcroft, who I generally have a favorable opinion of, only supports our Fourth Amendment protections when it’s a Democrat trying to violate them.

Right-Thinking on Trade
by Lee

After the Bush administration signed that abortive farm bill last year I wasn’t too pleased with their stance on international trade.  However, according to today’s Financial Times the United States is introducing a plan to quicky eliminate key tariffs.

Our Allies, the French
by Lee

Want to see what Jacques Chirac, President of NATO-member-and-ally-in-the-war-on-terror France was doing today at the NATO summit in Prague, while the heads of the other NATO states were speaking?  Was he listening intently?  Was he weighing his country’s options regarding possible action in Iraq?

Nope.  He was reading a fucking magazine. Charming people, those French.

Dumbass Spammer
by Lee

So today I was hit by my first spammer, whose messages I have deleted.  In the fine tradition of most of the left-wingers who have contributed to this blog he had nothing at all to say, and showed just how stupid he is with his own words.  Here’s his master comment:

You seem even dumber then George W. Bush himself and that is truely impressive.

There you go.  A guy who can’t even spell at a fourth grade level is calling me dumb.  Plus, this comment leads me to believe he’s a pissed off Canadian:  “That trailerpark website is representative of the average american. How does that make you feel?” Coming from a pathetic dickhead like you it makes me feel quite good.  Have fun up in the great white north, with your national penis envy directed towards those of us south of the 49th parallel who actually have the balls to stand up and fight.  Sit there and shake like the coward you are.

Anyway, if anyone wants to screw with him a bit his IP is 67.68.234.48.  I’ve logged his messages and contacted his ISP about him.  What a fucking moron.

Update: The spammer has struck again.  (Scroll down)

Why Racial Profiling Works
by Lee

LAPD Officer Jack Dunphy has a great column on National Review Online regarding the recent spate of murders occuring in Los Angeles.  He makes a wonderful point about racial profiling, and how the objections raised to it by black community leaders and left-wing activists has the unintended result of getting more black people killed.

Consider: As of July 31 of this year there had been 299 murders in the city of Los Angeles. Of the victims, 141 (47 percent) were Hispanic and 134 (45 percent) were black, reflecting a pattern that has remained steady for the last few years. Detectives had identified 158 suspects in these crimes, of whom 69 (44 percent) were Hispanic and 64 (40 percent) were black. There were eight whites (5 percent) identified, as well as 17 (11 percent) of what LAPD record keepers label as “others,” primarily Asians and Middle Easterners. Based on what I have observed since July, there is no reason to believe the year-end totals will produce anything but a similar breakdown among both victims and suspects.

But under the terms of a federal consent decree imposed in the wake of the Rampart scandal, LAPD officers are required to report the race of nearly every person they stop in the course of their workday, and in the current political climate, woe be to that officer whose numbers reflect anything even close to those listed above. In other words, everyone knows who’s doing the shooting around town, but if you go out and try to do something about it you’ll soon have Maxine Waters and the assembled masses of the No Justice, No Peace Hallelujah Chorus camped out and traipsing across your front yard.

It has long been a fact that black people are most often killed by other black people.  By forcing the police to focus on white suspects at the same percentage that they do blacks police waste valuable time that could be used arresting actual criminals, criminals who will eventually go on to kill other blacks.  But protecting blacks is never the issue with liberals.  Appearing to protect blacks is much more important.

This simple logic works equally well in the war against terror.  By forcing airport screeners to focus on little old ladies as often as they do young Arabic men they reduce the likelihood that they will be successful in protecting the public.  But hey, I hope Norman Mineta sleeps well at night knowing that nobody is offended.

Give Me A Break
by Lee

I wasn’t going to write about this post I saw on Liberal Oasis, until I saw that Progressive Gold has quoted it on their site.

If you are going after Jesse James, you ought to organize the posse first.
-- Al Gore, 9/23/02

Contrary to my image as a Texan with two guns on my side, I’m more comfortable with a posse.
-- Dubya, 11/21/02

Obviously Liberal Oasis sees some startling significance in the fact that Al Gore used the word posse, after which Bush used it two months later.  Despite the fact that the two quotes have nothing else in common whatsoever the mere fact that both contain the word posse seems to be evidence of yet another Bush conspiracy against Al Gore.
