Misty Watercolor Memories
by Lee

Germany will soon have a new place for family fun.

Hoping to capitalise on a wave of nostalgia for Communist East Germany, a Berlin company is planning to build a theme park that revives life behind the Iron Curtain in the country that disappeared nearly 13 years ago.

Massine Productions GmbH hopes to recreate a 10,000-square metre (107,600 sq ft) replica of East Germany, complete with surly border guards, rigorous customs inspections, authentic East German mark notes, and restaurants with regulation bland East German food.

“The aim isn’t to make big joke out of East Germany,” said Susanne Reich, a spokeswoman for the company which is expected to invest several million euros on the project, slated for the southeastern Berlin district of Koepenick.

“It was an important part of Germany’s history and the period should be recreated as accurately as possible.”

Coming soon at Universal Studios:  Schindler’s List, The Ride.  Each car is a miniature replica of an Auschwitz cattle car.  Ride staff in authentic SS uniforms push you into the car with bayonettes and call you a “filty Juden.” Smell the fragrance of real Zyklon-B!  Enjoy all the fun of WWII Germany right here in America!

Justice Delayed
by Lee

First there was the black billionaires, and now this.

A Mississippi jury Friday found an aging former Klansman guilty of murdering a black farmhand in 1966 as part of a bizarre plot to lure and then assassinate civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Ernest Avants, accused of being part of a Ku Klux Klan trio who abducted and shot Ben Chester White in the Homochitto National Forest in Mississippi, sat passively as the verdict from the racially mixed jury was read out in a federal court in Jackson, the state capital.

Avants, 72, faces a sentence of life in prison. His two alleged co-conspirators are dead.

We live in a country where blacks are billionaires, and where Southern juries convict Klansmen for killing black men 40 years ago.  And yet there are those on the left who are more than willing to fully swallow the idea that America is such a racist place that it is impossible for blacks to achieve anything in life or receive justice.  In this case, justice delayed is better than justice denied.

Update: Following up on the recent race discussions, Thomas Sowell’s latest column is right on the money.

Quid Pro Quo
by Lee

Nobody plays the game like the US.

The United States designated three rebel groups in Chechnya today as “terrorist organizations” linked to Al Qaeda and imposed a freeze on their American assets. The groups were described as having been involved in the seizure of a Moscow theater last October in which 129 people died.

The administration’s action, announced by the State Department, was in response to a longstanding request from Russia and reflected support for President Vladimir V. Putin at a time when the United States is seeking Russian backing for a possible war against Iraq.

I think this is a great idea.  I’ve often wondered why we hadn’t designated some of these Chechen groups as terrorist organizations, so if doing so now gets us a little political capital with the Russians then all the better for us.  We’ve lobbed the ball at them, let’s see if the Russians take a swing at it.

The Death of Liberalism
by Lee

This could spell doom for the Democrat Party.

Fifty years to the day from the discovery of the structure of DNA, one of its co-discoverers has caused a storm by suggesting that stupidity is a genetic disease that should be cured.

On 28 February 1953 biologists James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA - the chemical code for all life. The breakthrough revealed how genetic information is passed from one generation to the next and revolutionised biology and medicine.

But in a documentary series to be screened in the UK on Channel 4, Watson says that low intelligence is an inherited disorder and that molecular biologists have a duty to devise gene therapies or screening tests to tackle stupidity.

“If you are really stupid, I would call that a disease,” says Watson, now president of the Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory, New York. “The lower 10 per cent who really have difficulty, even in elementary school, what’s the cause of it? A lot of people would like to say, ‘Well, poverty, things like that.’ It probably isn’t. So I’d like to get rid of that, to help the lower 10 per cent.”

Watson, no stranger to controversy, also suggests that genes influencing beauty could also be engineered. “People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty. I think it would be great.”

The Al Shaprton campaign could not be reached for comment.

The U.S. 9th District Court of Appeals in San Francisco, the most overturned court in the nation, has refused to reconsider its ruling, thus clearing the way for the case to go to the US Supreme Court.  This in and of itself is not surprising.  Listen, however, to this crap.

“We may not—we must not—allow public sentiment or outcry to guide our decisions,” Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote in the 46-page opinion.

“It is particularly important that we understand the nature of our obligations and the strength of our constitutional principles in times of national crisis,” Reinhardt wrote. “It is then that our freedoms and our liberties are in the greatest peril.”

Lst time I checked my Constitution the First Amendment stated Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.  Since Congress is not establishing a religion, the only thing I can see happening is that the Ninth Circuit is doing nothing but denying American citizens the freedoms and liberties guaranteed them in the Constitution.

Chicken ala Auschwitz

The latest ad campaign from PETA shows, yet again, what a true bunch of scumbags comprise that organization.

The Anti-Defamation League has denounced a campaign by an animal rights group that compares slaughtering animals to the murder of 6 million Jews in World War II.

The graphic campaign and exhibit “Holocaust on Your Plate,” devised by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, juxtaposes 60-square-foot panels displaying gruesome scenes from Nazi death camps side by side with disturbing photographs from factory farms and slaughterhouses. One shows a starving man in a concentration camp next to a starving cow.

That’s right, gentle reader.  There is no difference between farm animals and Jews.

The comparisons prompted an angry statement from Abraham Foxman, Anti-Defamation League national director and a Holocaust survivor.

“The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate, systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent,” the statement said. “PETA’s effort to seek approval for their ‘Holocaust on Your Plate’ campaign is outrageous, offensive and takes chutzpah to new heights.”

The simple, inescapable fact is that these PETA morons don’t distinguish between human life and animal life.  And, being leftists, I’d be willing to bet that every single member of PETA fully supports abortion rights.  I guess the sanctity of life argument doesn’t count when you forget to take the pill one weekend.

Fred vs. Marty
by Lee

Drudge broke this story yesterday on his site, and Instapundit is linking to this story about how former senator Fred Thompson, now on the show Law & Order, has filmed a pro-Bush rebuttal commercial to counter the one recently filmed by Martin Sheen.

Thompson has taped a pro-war television ad for the conservative group Citizens United to counter last week’s anti-war ad by Sheen for the liberal group MoveOn.org. The former U.S. senator also began a series of television talk show appearances in support of President Bush’s Iraq policy.

Last week Thompson said in an interview that he would like the character he plays on “Law & Order,” conservative District Attorney Arthur Branch, to run against liberal President Josiah Bartlet, Sheen’s character on “The West Wing.” The NBC shows are back-to-back on Wednesdays.

The movie is available for viewing as a RealMedia file from the Citizens United website.  Or, click the image below.

It’s a good commercial, succinct and plainly worded.  The best line is at the end.

When people ask, “What has Saddam done to us?” I ask, “What had the 9/11 hijackers done to us, before 9/11?”

An excellent question indeed.

Not In America
by Lee

More evidence of America’s omnipresent institutional racism.

While many of the world’s richest people saw their fortunes shrink again in the last year, Oprah Winfrey’s grew enough to put her on Forbes magazine’s list of billionaires - the first black woman to join the ranks.

Oprah’s media empire grew steadily stronger, and she made the list this year with a net worth of $1 billion. Her debut comes just two years after Black Entertainment Television founder Robert Johnson became the first black billionaire.

It’s truly a shame that black people can’t make it in America.

Just the latest example of teachers who feel their main task is to indoctrinate children rather than teach them to read and write.

“What we’re hearing is that some of the educators are talking about the possible war in Iraq being unethical and that those who would fight it are unethical,” Maj. Rogers said.

The state commissioner of education has urged school officials to be more “sensitive” to military children.

“Recently it has been brought to our attention that some school personnel ... may have been less than sensitive to children of military families regarding our continued strained relations with Iraq,” Mr. Albanese wrote in a letter sent Tuesday to all superintendents and principals in Maine.

“In some cases, parents—who are about to be deployed—have observed added stress and anxiety among their children who perceive a staff member or their peers as being insensitive to their beliefs and the potential danger to loved ones,” Mr. Albanese wrote.

The commissioner said that, while supporting “the right to discuss controversial issues,” he wanted “to remind school personnel ... that the families of military personnel need our sensitivity.”

These teachers need to be fired immediately.  Can you think of any other issue where this sort of harrassment would be permitted?  I can’t.

The Great White Mouth
by Lee

Yet another Canadian politician has been badmouthing America.

A Liberal MP has apologized for saying about Americans: “I hate those bastards.”

MP Carolyn Parrish was speaking to reporters about Canada’s diplomatic initiative on Iraq. At the end of her comments, after most of the cameras were turned off, Parrish said, “Damn Americans—I hate those bastards.”

CBC reporter Susan Lunn, who heard Parrish make the comment, said the MP then laughed as she was walking away.

In a written statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Parrish says she made the comments in the heat of the moment in a private conversation. She said they do not reflect her opinion of the American people.

“My comments do not reflect my personal opinion of the American people and they certainly do not reflect the views of the government of Canada,” she said in her written statement.

Since this is, what, the second or third time in recent months than a Canadian politician has said something of this nature, I think that this is a damn good indication of that the views of the government of Canada actually are.

Fire With Fire

Yesterday the Saddam supporters over at Win Without War tied up government phone lines trying to keep Saddam in power.  Dr. Jal Hampson emailed me to point out this post at LGF:

Suppose for a moment that war supporters just spontaneously decide to call Lynn Erskine, the listed contact for Win Without War, at her phone number, which by the way is 202-478-3429, to let Lynn know how they felt about the war, or left her a voice mail detailing their views on tying up Washington’s phone lines during a time of crisis? How many calls do you think it would take before that number was rendered useless for the purpose of organizing the next protest?

How many voice mails, (long, polite ones, mind you, because war supporters are a genteel, reasonable and extremely slow talking folk when it comes to leaving voice mails), do you think Win Without War would wade through in order to hear ones more supportive of their cause? How many voice mails before someone reaches the tipping point and decides to just hit the delete button until all the messages are gone?

Would that tipping point be higher or lower for Not In Our Name, if war supporters also called their national office, at 212-969-8058.

Is either tipping point the same as the one after which spokesmen for those groups would use the phrase “suppression of dissent” when speaking to NPR about said phone calls?

Anyone who might consider doing such a thing should not forget to dial *67 first if they wanted to block their caller ID.

Walking the Walk

Sage advice from Hamid Karzai.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai delivered a sobering message to the U.S. Congress today:  Don’t forget Afghanistan.

“If you leave the whole thing for us to fight again, it will be repeating the mistakes that the United States made during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan,” Karzai told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“Once the Soviets left, the Americans left. The consequence of that was what you saw in Afghanistan and in the United States and in the rest of the world,” he said, indicating increased terrorist activity, including the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.

The Afghan president said the United States must maintain a focus on his country until terrorism is absolutely defeated, the Afghan government and institutions are rebuilt, the economy is stronger, and a constitution is in place. “We are nearly at the end of the forest, (but) not outside of it,” he said.

The US has an incredible opportunity to show the world that we actually stand up for all we purport to.  Let’s face it, for all the talk about freedom and liberty that we speak as a nation, we’ve also done some despicable things in our past.  We are in a position to atone for those past sins by continuing to rebuild Afghanistan and by liberating and democratizing Iraq.
