Mork on Bush
by Lee

Robin Williams has chimed in on things.

Funnyman Robin Williams has launched a scathing attack on President George W. Bush and his decision to go ahead with war on Iraq.

The “One Hour Photo” actor also criticizes what he sees as his country’s mixed messages when it comes to national security.

He says, “America is broke, basically, but Bush wants to wage a war that costs pretty much a billion dollars a month.

“We have a president for whom English is a second language. He’s like ‘We have to get rid of dictators,’ but he’s pretty much one himself.

“In America, we have orange alert, but what the hell does that mean? We’re supposed to be afraid of Krishna? Of orange sorbet? Then it’s like, ‘You can’t go out and shop, it’s too dangerous out there,’ but if that happens then the economy falls.

“The message is so mixed: ‘Be afraid, but not too afraid.’”

Nanu nanu.

Blogged to Death
by Lee

The Guardian takes on the blogpshere’s coverage of the death of terrorist supporter and useful idiot Rachel Corrie.  (See here and here and here.)

Having been bulldozed to death, Rachel was duly blogged to death. The front-page news stories came out on March 17. By the next day, sites such as the aptly-named SharkBlog (hosted by Stefan Sharkansky) were in full mephitic flow. The Shark himself led the charge with a riff on “The Prime of Miss Rachel Corrie”, casting her as Mary MacGregor, the idiot girl in Muriel Spark’s novel. She had committed “suicide by bulldozer” as deliberately as her Palestinian buddies with their body bombs.

Accompanying emails were less literary. J Lichty, for example, posted his opinion that, “This deluded harpie did not want peace, she did not want human rights, she wanted victory. Victory for the enemies of America, victory for the enemies of the Jews, victory for the enemy of civilisation.”

Jack Rich emailed his assent to this analysis: “Yeah, you’ve got it exactly right: this poor dupe sacrificed her life so that her poseur profs back home might preen for the cameras.”

Good thing the author didn’t visit this site.  His head would have exploded.

Praying for Defeat
by Lee

According to an article in Le Monde, only one third of the French (34%) they want the United States and England to win, and a quarter (25%) want Iraq to win.  Yes, gentle reader, a quarter of all French want Iraq to defeat the United States.  The original article is in French, but I ran the salient paragraph through SYSTRAN.

More impressive still is the small degree of solidarity of the French with the United States and Great Britain. A third of them only (34 %) answers that, in this conflict, they rather smell “side of the United States and the English” and this percentage is systematically lower in the majority, even in the sympathizers of right-hand side (44 %) and at oldest (47 % at the most 70 years). Conversely, a quarter of probed rather declare “side of Iraq” and up to 30 % at less than 35 years. Lastly, 31 % of the questioned people say to feel close to any of the two camps and 10 % do not decide. [Emphasis added]

This is not merely a political difference between the governments of France and the United States.  This is a cultural head-on collision.  A quarter of all French (a third, when you look at those under 35) actually want the US/UK to be defeated by Iraq

When this is all over, it is time for a serious realignment of US responsibilities and obligations.

Cannon Fodder
by Lee

This was bound to happen.

U.S. troops shot and killed at least seven Iraqi civilians—some of them children—in a van at checkpoint Monday in southern Iraq when the driver did not stop as ordered, U.S. Central Command said.

“In light of recent terrorist attacks by the Iraqi regime, the soldiers exercised considerable restraint to avoid the unnecessary loss of life,” the statement said.

This is terrible.  The Marines have to live with the knowledge that they killed women and children, something that will most likely haunt them for the rest of their lives.  Saddam gets a propaganda victory, which al Jazeera will undoubtedly portray to the Arab world as an act of aggression by the Armies of the Great Satan.  And the bleeding heart, hate America left will spin this as a war crime.

This weird flu-like disease keeps spreading.

More than 100 people in one Hong Kong apartment block were suspected to have been infected by a deadly pneumonia virus, officials said on Monday, triggering fears that the killer disease was being spread through air or water.

At least two more people died from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong during the day, taking the death toll in the city to 15 and to 61 worldwide.

Could this be a bio weapon?  Probably not, but in the times we live I don’t feel we can rule anything out.

Going Down the List
by Lee

What’s next?  I’ve been thinking for a while that Syria might be next in the lineup.  It looks like I may be right.

The war of words between the United States and Syria escalated today when the Syrian Foreign Ministry said it hoped to “see the invaders defeated in Iraq.”

The latest bellicose remarks came after a speech on Sunday night by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to a Jewish group in which he accused Syria of providing “direct support for terrorist groups and the dying regime of Saddam Hussein.”

He added, “Syria bears the responsibility for its choices, and for the consequences.”

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld. had started the war of words on Friday, when he accused Damascus of shipping sensitive military technology to the Iraqi Army, specifically night-vision goggles. These shipments, Mr. Rumsfeld said, “pose a direct threat to coalition forces.” He added, “We consider such trafficking as hostile acts and will hold the Syrian government responsible.”

I think Iran will be in revolution within two years, and that we might have to end up going into Syria sometime between now and then.

Live from Nowhere

Peter Arnett has also been fired by National Geographic.  Hear that large explosion in Baghdad?  No, it’s not a cruise missile, it’s Arnett’s career.

White Feathers
by Lee

First an American soldier frags his own troops, and now a few British solders are refusing to fight.

Two British soldiers have been sent home from the Gulf for refusing to fight in a war involving the deaths of civilians, according to a solicitor who advises troops.

Justin Hugheston-Roberts says the soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade, based in Colchester, Essex, told their commanding officers they would not take part in the military action.

Mr Hugheston-Roberts, chairman of Forces Law, said they could be thrown out of the Army or have to face a court martial. It is understood they are a private and an air technician.

It’s a shame that the past 15 years of realtive peace have produced a generation of gutless cowards who feel that nothing is worth fighting for.  It’s a bigger shame that some of these vermin end up in the armed forces.

Chemicals Between Us
by Lee

Remember those chemical weapons that Iraq doesn’t have?  Well, it looks more and more likely that they’re going to use them.

Iraqi troops have been spotted between U.S. and Iraqi lines wearing full chemical outfits, hoods, gloves and boots, U.S. officials familiar with military planning and intelligence said. This gear would allow them to survive on a battlefield where chemical weapons were employed.

Some were also seen unloading 50-gallon drums off trucks. U.S. intelligence is unsure what is in the drums, but officials are concerned.

The officials noted that, separately, U.S. intelligence has determined that Iraqi troops are carrying antidotes for chemical attacks.

When chemical and bio weapons are used against coalition troops, I hope the “peace” protesters take a moment to reflect on their own complicity.

Bye Bye Pete
by Lee

Following up on this story, Peter Arnett has been fired by NBC for his comments on Iraqi TV.

NBC and MSNBC on Monday said they had terminated their relationship with Peter Arnett after the journalist told state-run Iraqi TV that the U.S.-led coalition?s initial war plan had failed and that reports from Baghdad about civilian casualties had helped antiwar protesters undermine the Bush administration?s strategy.

“IT WAS wrong for Mr. Arnett to grant an interview to state controlled Iraqi TV—especially at a time of war—and it was wrong for him to discuss his personal observations and opinions in that interview,” NBC News President Neal Shapiro said in a statement. “Therefore, Peter Arnett will no longer be reporting for NBC News and MSNBC.”

What a way to end a career.

Update: Drudge is reporting that the US military has kicked out Geraldo Rivera for “giving away crucial details of future military operations during live broadcast.” What an asshole.

Flags On Heads
by Lee

The idiots at SFIndymedia chime in on the cops wearing flag bandanas that were seen down at the pro-America rally.

how can they smile like that in times like these, they dont see what is going on.they dont read the real news, they dont c the dead men, women and children.yes they have the freedom of speach to be there and support their ideas but first of all they should get informed of whats REALLY going on.they r blinded by what they think, its patriotic, but it is just a symbol of hate, racisism, abuse of nations and peoples and most of all IGNORANCE.

Yes folks, people here in San Francisco really are this delusional.  I at least had the decency to blur their faces, but the left isn’t really what you could describe as pro-police.

Arnett Sells Out
by Lee

Well, someone just pissed away an otherwise remarkable journalism career.  Take a look at the transcript of NBC/National Geographic’s Peter Arnett being interviewed on Iraqi TV.  He congratulates the openness and cooperation of the Iraqi Ministry of Information, and actually says this:

In answer to your question, it is clear that within the United States there is growing challenge to President Bush about the conduct of the war and also opposition to the war. So our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States. It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments.

Note the irony.  Arnett was one of the three guys who usered in the golden age of CNN by being the only broadcasters live on the air during the beginning of hostilities during the first Gulf War.  And now that he’s with NBC, his former network is providing the transcript of his disgusting dalliance with enemy propaganda.

Self Defense
by Lee

Yet another story that contradicts everything in Bowling for Columbine.

The Warren woman told police she braked for a stop sign on Lorraine Boulevard at Dodge Avenue, when the man opened the driver’s door of her 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass. With his hand in his right pocket, he pressed an object to her jaw that she believed was a gun.

The culprit ordered her to give him money—but she had other thoughts.

Clutching $6 in one hand, she began struggling with him as he again demanded her money.

Determined not to become a robbery statistic, the woman reached with her other hand to the passenger seat for her 9 mm handgun, grabbed the pistol and pointed it at his face.

“If you’re going to shoot me then do it, ‘cause I’m definitely going to kill you,” the brave resident replied, according to police reports.

The surprised assailant ran without getting a cent.

Just think, if the criminal had had a gun and the woman had been unarmed, Michael Moore might have had another picture to leave on Charlton Heston’s doorstep.  How disappointed he must be.
