Asking For Help
by Lee

When the US Marines entered the holy city of Najaf the local Shi’ites went apeshit.  We all saw that scene on the news where the jarheads faced an angry mob of thousands in front of the mosque.  Well, the Marines did as requested and stayed away.  Now that the mosque is no more, and the imam is dead, the Shi’ites are singing a new tune.

Political and religious authorities in the Shiite holy cities south of Baghdad had demanded from the start of the U.S.-led occupation that Marines in the region keep a low profile and stay away from sacred Muslim shrines.

Both sides were proud of the peace that prevailed as a result.

No U.S. Marine has been killed in Iraq since April 12, despite the force having taken control of a huge area in the south-central part of the country. By comparison, there have been 68 combat deaths among American soldiers in the rest of the country, primarily in Baghdad.

With Friday’s bombing of the Imam Ali shrine in Najaf and the death of 125 people including the beloved Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim Iraqi authorities have to a small degree dropped their strictures on Americans becoming involved in security at holy sites. They have called for FBI investigators to join the inquiry.

If a group of fanatical Shi’ites can recognize the value of setting up a country and fighting terrorism, wouldn’t it be nice if American liberals could realize the same thing?

Global Panic
by Lee

The latest volley in the global warming debate is here.

The earth is warmer now than it has been at any time in the past 2,000 years, the most comprehensive study of climatic history has revealed.

Confirming the worst fears of environmental scientists, the newly published findings are a blow to sceptics who maintain that global warming is part of the natural climatic cycle rather than a consequence of human industrial activity.

To its credit, the Guardian provides commentary from three or four skeptical scientists, which is three or four more than you usually get in articles like this.  It just goes to show that there is no scientific consensus about (a) whether global warming is occurring, (b) if warming is being caused primarily by humans, or (c) if green house gases are the cause.  (For links to more on this subject, see here.) There’s certainly not enough confirmative evidence to justify enacting junk science legislation like the Kyoto protocols.

Zinging Arnie
by Lee

McClintock comes out with great shot at Arnie.

McClintock, speaking on CNN, compared himself to Schwarzenegger at 29, the age at which Schwarzenegger gave a 1977 interview to Oui magazine and boasted about his sexual exploits: “I admit I didn’t have as colorful a youth as Arnold Schwarzenegger. ... When I was 29, I was the Republican whip in the California state Assembly, serving my second term in the state Legislature.”

But, showing he’s a decent guy, McClintock adds:

McClintock, 47, said the 1977 interview was irrelevant to the policy discussions needed in the campaign.

Good for him.  Arnie needs to get out and do a better job diffusing this situation.  Handle it carefully now and it will blow over.  Ignore it and the media will make it the central point of your campaign, whether you like it or not.

The Dog Is Dead
by Lee

Big surprise here—the Baghdad mosque bombers aren’t Iraqis, they’re Saudis.

TWO Saudis arrested after the Najaf attack in Iraq that killed leading Shiite cleric Mohammad Baqer al-Hakim were picked up after sending an e-mail saying “mission accomplished: the dog is dead”, The Times reported today quoting a source close to the Iraqi inquiry.

The men were grabbed by a crowd and taken to the nearest police station after being seen sending the e-mail from an Internet cafe, the source said.

The bombing on Friday in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf killed at least 83 people including Ayatollah Hakim, regarded as a moderate Shiite.

The two suspects apparently attracted the attention of the son of the cafe owner after having “offered a larger than usual sum of money to use a computer”, the British daily said.

It was then that the son saw the men send a message saying “mission accomplished: the dog is dead”.

Grabbed by an angry crowd of Shiite Muslims, the two men “admitted they were Saudi Wahhabis working for al-Qaeda”, Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network, the source was quoted as saying.

“Hey, we’re on your side!  Sure we blew up your holy mosque and killed your Imam, but we’re doing it for Allah!” In the post linked above I said that the radical Islamicists are getting desperate, and this just bolsters that claim.

Second Thoughts from Cruz

Bustamante May Renounce Ties to Racist Organization

(2003-08-29)—California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante today said he is considering renouncing ties to a so-called racist organization which persists in judging a person by the color of his skin rather than the content of his character.

“I don’t know if can stay with a group that promotes racial division,” said Mr. Bustamante. “Their ideas have resulted in a wave of minority illiteracy and unemployment, third-generation welfare families and the deaths of countless thousands of potential black and Hispanic citizens through abortion. How can I, in good conscience, remain a member of the Democrat party?”

A gubernatorial campaign spokesman said Mr. Bustamante joined the party while in college, and should not be held responsible “for his youthful indiscretions.”

Absolutely brilliant.

Crushing Man
by Lee

What do you get when 30,000 countercultural hippie assholes drop acid in the desert?  Dead people.

A 21-year-old California woman was killed early this morning at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert when she was accidentally run over by a vehicle she had been riding.

Authorities say Katherine Lampman was killed about 3 a.m. as she tried to get off an “art car,” which is similar to a parade float.

Officials say that somehow Lampman fell under the vehicle’s wheels. Lampman was from Belmont, California--about 20 miles south of San Francisco.

She’s not the only person to croak this year, either.

Earlier yesterday four people were injured when their small plane crashed as it tried to land. All four victims were later flown to a Reno hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.

Fridaynight another plane crashed at the airstrip, sending one person to the hospital with back injuries.

Perhaps they should have waited to land before dropping acid.

The Mother of Invention
by Lee

Have I mentioned lately how much I love capitalism?

Adding bubbles to milk is tricky. Pump in too many, and it foams over. Add too few and why bother.

George and Mary Ann Clark, husband-and-wife entrepreneurs, have spent the past seven years trying to find the balance. Last week, they started production on a carbonated milk-based drink called Refreshing Power Milk—RPM—and they already have orders coming in from school districts.

Mary Ann Clark, a registered nurse, said she was pained to see children drinking cola and shunning milk when she worked in schools so she decided to do something about it.

“If you take water and add carbon dioxide to make soda, why can’t you do that with milk?” she asked.

Anything that can get kids to drink skim milk over sodas is a good deal in my book.  Good for them.  (And how much a shock it must be for our statist friends that this could bring about a change in children’s drinking habits without a new tax or government regulation!  “What?  Free markets solving problems?  Impossible!")

A Few More Francs
by Lee

Following up on this post, France has actually won one, sort of.

Libya has agreed to increase compensation for the 1989 bombing of a French airliner, allowing it to close the Lockerbie case and repair relations with the West, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said on Sunday.

The compensation row erupted after Britain moved to end U.N. sanctions on Libya when Tripoli agreed this month to pay $2.7 billion to families of the 270 people killed in the 1988 bombing of an airliner over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

But France, a veto-wielding permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, had threatened to block the move unless Tripoli increased its compensation to relatives of those who died when an UTA airliner was blown up over Niger in 1989.

They didn’t get what they were asking for, however.

A source familiar with the Libyan position told Reuters on Saturday, Tripoli had offered around $300,000 per family.

That would be a significant increase on the original pay out, but still less than the families had been seeking.

Yet one more reason France shouldn’t have a permanent seat on the UNSC.
