Let’s hear it for science!

Sixteen-year-old Serena Fasano, a junior at Glenelg High School, has been awarded a patent for a protein that she discovered - one that may someday help fight one of the world’s deadliest diseases.

“It’s phenomenal,” said Kendall Morton, the science team leader at Glenelg. “I’m very happy for her.”

Fasano will get to name the protein, she said, but she is not allowed to call it Serena, or to name it after her friends, as some have half-seriously requested. Instead, it will need a scientific name indicating it is a probiotic - a good protein.

In three years of scientific research and countless hours at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where her father is a director of the Mucosal Biology Research Center, she has discovered a component of yogurt that seems to eradicate E.coli 042, the leading cause of diarrhea, which kills 6 million people a year, mostly children under the age of 2, and mostly in Third World countries.

Meanwhile, at her high school, other sixteen year old girls are discovering their own sources of protein: their boyfriends.

More Cartoon Protest
by Lee

In his recent State of the Union address, President Bush urged Congress to pass a ban on animal/human hybrids.  Taking their cure from his lead, China has sprung into action.

Jessica Rabbit isn’t welcome in China—and Michael Jordan shouldn’t show up with any of his Looney Toons pals.

In one of the more bizarre orders from China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, TV shows and films featuring human thesps with animated companions will be banned.

“These human live-action, so-called animation pieces will not receive distribution or distribution licenses,” read the order, issued Feb. 15. However, films and shows that have already received permits will continue to air.

CGI and 2-D characters alongside human actors jeopardize “the broadcast order of homemade animation and mislead their development,” according to a report from the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

When I was a kid living in Norway you had to be 15 to go and see any Disney cartoon featuring Donald Duck.  Why?  Because Donald wasn’t wearing any pants.  I shit you not.

Friends of Osama
by Lee

Here’s a blast from the past.

The Central Intelligence Agency did not target Al Qaeda chief Osama bin laden once as he had the royal family of the United Arab Emirates with him in Afghanistan, the agency’s director, George Tenet, told the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States on Thursday.

Had the CIA targeted bin Laden, half the royal family would have been wiped out as well, he said.

Had the CIA acted at the time, bin Laden would be dead, and now Bush wouldn’t have a family of terrorist supporters to sell control of our ports to.

Poo Power
by Lee

Only in San Francisco.

San Francisco, a leader in urban recycling, is preparing to enlist its canine population for a first in the United States: converting dog poop into energy.
Norcal Waste Systems Inc., the city’s garbage company, plans to test collection carts and biodegradable bags in a city-center park popular with dog walkers.

A city study found that almost 4 percent of all the garbage picked up at San Francisco homes was from animal waste destined for the city’s landfill, Norcal Waste spokesman Robert Reid said. San Francisco has an estimated 120,000 dogs.

“The city asked us to start thinking about a pilot program to recycle the dog poop in order to cut back adding more waste in landfills,” Reid said.

Dog feces could be scooped into a methane digester, a device that uses bugs and microorganisms to gobble up the material and emit methane, which would be trapped and burned to power a turbine to make electricity or to heat homes.

Next up: hooking up electrical generators to people who butt fuck.

Selling Out Our Soldiers
by Lee

Allow me to elaborate on what I find so offensive about the situation detailed in this post, with Bush cutting veteran’s benefits.  I understand the need to control costs, and in the larger sense I don’t have a problem with reworking benefits in the grand scheme of things.  But we have a federal budget with hundreds of billions of dollars of pork in it.  Before we go cutting the benefits of people who have served this nation with honor, how about the take the axe to some of these hundreds of billions of dollars of pure government pork.  What is just so astonishingly dusgusting is that our GOP-controlled government, when faced with the need to cut costs from the federal budget, decided that selling out our veterans was the more preferable option instead of cutting some of the pet pork projects that they tack on to every bill they ever pass.  It’s despicable and reprehensible that our GOP has sunk this low.  I mean, I can put up with a lot of shit, but this is just beyond the pale.

Explosions of Peace™
by Lee

Following up on their success whipping ignorant Muslims into a frenzy over a few harmless cartoons, the Islamofascists from the Religion of Peace™ have started demolishing their own mosques.

A bomb attack in Iraq has damaged one of the Muslim world’s holiest shrines, sparking demonstrations outside.

The blast happened early in the morning at the Askariya shrine in Samarra, 90km (60 miles) north of Baghdad.

Two armed men overcame the guards are before detonating explosives. Reports say part of the building’s celebrated golden dome has been damaged.

The shrine contains the tombs of two revered Shia imams and attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

The BBC’s Jon Brain in Baghdad says the attack appears to be an attempt to stir sectarian violence.

Supporting the Troops, Bush-Style
by Lee

Just when I thought my opinion of our GOP-run government couldn’t get any lower

The Bush administration wants many military retirees to pay more for health care, a proposal that could force the Republican-run Congress to choose between savvy politics and budget discipline.

Annual health-care costs for the military have doubled to nearly $38 billion in the past five years, nearly one dollar of every $12 the Pentagon spends. The price tag is projected to soar to $64 billion by 2015.

To help contain those costs, President Bush’s proposal includes higher prescription drug co-payments for all beneficiaries of military health care except those on active duty, and increased annual enrollment fees for military retirees under age 65.

If lawmakers want to follow Bush’s lead and control spiraling health care expenditures, they will have to vote to boost costs for some of the nation’s military families in a year in which the entire House and one-third of the Senate is up for re-election.

Congressional support for the proposal is uncertain. Lawmakers question whether the plan is the best route, and they have rejected similar efforts in the past.

Cutting benefits for veterans in the middle of a war.  Brought to you by the same president who hires our enemy to run our ports.

Someone tell me again, why should I vote GOP in 2008?  Come on, give me a good reason.

Social Conditioning
by Lee

The other day, in the comments to this post, I weighed in on the idea of Muslim violence.

The only difference between a devout Christian and a devout Muslim is that the Christian has most likely grown up in the west, and in the west we went through hundreds of years of reformation and enlightenment.  The Muslim has not gone through anything of the sort, and thus lives in world where the rules of society permit him to act like a savage animal, roughly akin to the way the west was in the 17th century.

It’s not a religious thing, it’s a societal thing.  The only difference between western Christians and middle eastern Muslims is that the Muslims lack the social constraints of a system of democratic constitutional law.

For example, look at Lebanon.  There you have the very embodiment of a metropolitan Middle Eastern society, where secularists lived side by side with Jews, Muslims, and Christians.  The net result, of course, was Beirut.  Every one of these sides was a vicious and brutal as the other.  The Phalangist Christians didn’t love their brothers any more or less than the Muslims or the Druse or the Jews or any of the other sects in the city.  This is because in a lawless society, lawless behavior is condoned and commonplace.

Look at the integration of Muslims in the US.  By and large the Muslim communities in this country are peaceful and law-abiding, a far cry from their brethren in the Arab world.  This isn’t because the Muslims here are any less devout, only that they recognize that the democratic society in which we live is just as important as religion.

Without the law, Christians would be EXACTLY like Arab Muslims.  Theocracy is theocracy is theocracy.  It is only within the confines of a secular state that religious and personal freedom can truly thrive.

As so often is the case, real life proves me right.

Irate Nigerian Christians yesterday burnt two mosques in Nigeria’s south-eastern Onitsha in a revenge attack for religious violence in the Muslim-dominated north which claimed 34 lives. Elsewhere in the state of Bauchi, a dawn-to-dusk curfew was imposed to pre-empt further clashes.

Yesterday’s clashes took place in Onitsha, the capital of the overwhelmingly Christian state of Anambra, which is home to Nigeria’s ethnic Igbo group who attacked the Hausas, a Muslim group based in northern Nigeria.

“There was a scuffle between the ethnic Hausa and Ibo communities in Onitsha. Two mosques were burnt and policemen deployed to Onitsha have managed to restore peace to the city,” Anambra State police spokesman Kolapo Shofoluwe told AFP.

Now, which would you attribute this violence to, the Christian religion, or the Nigerian society in which these Christians live?  I’ve got my problems with Islam, and I don’t for a asecond underestimate the threat Islamofascism represents to the West.  But the fact remains that the violence of the Islamic world has more to do with Middle Eastern society than it does Muslim society.

Pissing Off the Catholics
by Lee

Here’s the latest religious group to be offended over free speech.

Catholic church leaders in New Zealand are urging a boycott of a broadcaster planning to screen an “ugly and tasteless” episode of South Park.

The episode of the US animation, called Bloody Mary, depicts a bleeding statue of the Virgin Mary. …

New Zealand’s Catholic bishops signed a letter on Sunday urging the country’s 500,000 Catholics to boycott C4 and its sister station TV3, which recently apologised for showing the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

They asked for the ban to extend to companies that advertise their products on the commercial network.

“Making known the extent of our offence might give them pause to consider that press freedom is not a licence to incite intolerance or to promote hated or derision based on religion, race or gender,” the letter said.

Pretty much the identical argument the lefties have been using to justify the rioting over the Muhammad cartoons, isn’t it?  Of course, the only difference here is that these Catholics somehow managed to avoid rioting, burning cars, firebombing embassies, and killing each other.  Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Kofi Loves Genocide
by Lee

I admit it, I’m a John Bolton fan.

U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said on Monday that Secretary-General Kofi Annan should be pushing U.N. officials harder in planning a force in Sudan’s Darfur region rather than just lobbying the United States for contributions.

“It would be helpful, I think, if the secretary-general, in addition to prodding the U.S., could also be out there talking to the African Union and the Arab League, and in fact, even talking to his own peacekeepers about the importance of moving ahead here,” Bolton told reporters.

When told of Bolton’s remarks, Annan said, “I’m not going to answer that.” But his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the U.N. “planning process was moving full speed ahead.”

Annan, before his meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush last week, said a future U.N. peacekeeping force should include nations, like the United States, which had the air power and logistics for a new robust, mobile operation to stop the killings, rape, pillaging and homelessness in Darfur.

The United States has sent four military planners to help the United Nations map out a Darfur mission to take over the underfinanced African Union, which has 7,000 troops and monitors in the vast western region of Sudan.

Bolton said that while the United Nations had begun contingency planning “a lot more could be done.”

“And that is why we have been pressing the secretariat hard,” Bolton said. “We want to make sure there is not a disjunction between what the secretary-general says publicly and what the secretariat itself is doing.”

Poor Kofi Annan.  That mean old John Bolton just isn’t going to let him get away with anything, now, is he?

Jimmah and the Ports
by Lee

Oh, well, this makes me feel a whole lot safer.

President Bush is taking a battering from fellow Republicans, even the governors of New York and Maryland, over the administration’s support for a decision that gives an Arab company control of some commercial operations at six major seaports—including Miami-Dade’s.

But he got a boost Monday from an unlikely source, frequent critic and former president Jimmy Carter, who downplayed fears that the deal poses a risk.

‘’The overall threat to the United States and security, I don’t think it exists,’’ Carter said on CNN’s The Situation Room. ``I’m sure the president’s done a good job with his subordinates to make sure this is not a threat.’’

Can you imagine any greater sign of something being a total disaster than Jimmy Carter thinking it’s a good idea?

The Coming Oblivion
by Lee

A Scripps Howard editorial absolutely nails it.

TREASURY SECRETARY John Snow this past week informed Congress that he would begin borrowing from the federal employees’ retirement fund to avoid exceeding the nation’s statutory debt limit of $8.184 trillion.

In other words, our great national credit card was about $10 billion shy of maxing out. Snow estimated that he could buy time until mid-March, but then Congress would have to raise the debt limit, which it last did in November 2004.

Snow’s message caused only mild muttering from Democrats and no response at all from Republicans, since it is a matter of some political embarrassment. Contrast this to 1996 when Democrats controlled the White House and top House Republicans angrily and noisily threatened to impeach Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin for doing the same thing. He was trampling on the constitutional separation of powers and on Congress’ cherished prerogatives, they thundered.

Increasing the national debt limit is usually the case for some pro-forma political grandstanding, with the party out of power using the vote as an opportunity to criticize the party in power for its spendthrift ways.

And Democrats do have some ammunition. When President Bush took office in 2001, the national debt — the publicly held portion of which had decreased for four straight years — stood at just over $5.7 trillion. If Bush administration forecasts are right, it will be just over $8.6 trillion, an increase of 50 percent on the president’s watch.

Call it just a hunch, but we’re probably not going to be hearing any Republican calls to impeach John Snow.

Remember when Clinton did this?  Remember how disgusted and outraged you were because of it?  Remember how you decried those tax-and-spend liberals, who were spending our kids into oblivion?  Well, guess what.  There’s someone in the White House who spends even more money than the Democrats, without the taxation necessary to pay for it.  And he’s spending us all into oblivion.

And, unfortunately, there are all too many Republicans willing to not only stand by and watch him do it, but cheer him on for doing so.  It’s disgusting to see how low the GOP has shrunk.  The George W. Bush presidency has done what the Democrats couldn’t do in 20 years, destroy the Reagan legacy.  It’s going to be another 20 years before sane conservatives retake the party.  We’re screwed.

When the next president implements massive tax raises, don’t blame him.  You blame the guy who made them a necessity, the Christosocialist we have runing our country.

If any of you have tried to email me over the weekend, sit tight.  My laptop’s hard drive has started taking a shit on me.  I’m in the process of cloning the hard drive so I can reformat it.  Unfortunately I use my laptop for all my email, so until I get this straightened out I’m going to be light on the email access for a day or two.

The Truth About Islam
by Lee

Mansoor Ijaz is must read.

In fact, the most glaring truth is that Islam’s mobsters fear the West has it right: that we have perfected the very system Islam’s holy scriptures urged them to learn and practice. And having failed in their mission to lead their masses, they seek any excuse to demonize those of us in the West and to try to bring us down. They know they are losing the ideological struggle for hearts and minds, for life in all its different dimensions, and so they prepare themselves, and us, for Armageddon by starting fires everywhere in a display of Islamic unity intended to galvanize the masses they cannot feed, clothe, educate or house.

Despite the left’s refusal to acknowledge it, we are in the early stages of a clash of civilizations.  And it is a war we must win at all costs.

Wipe?  My Ass…
by Lee

No, no, no, my friends!  It was all a big misunderstanding!

Iran’s foreign minister denied on Monday that Tehran wanted to see Israel “wiped off the map,” saying President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been misunderstood.

“Nobody can remove a country from the map. This is a misunderstanding in Europe of what our president mentioned,” Manouchehr Mottaki told a news conference, speaking in English, after addressing the European Parliament.

“How is it possible to remove a country from the map? He is talking about the regime. We do not recognize legally this regime,” he said.

Ahmadinejad caused a storm of condemnation last October after Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted him as telling a conference: “Israel must be wiped off the map.”

Mottaki’s comments came as he sought to assure EU lawmakers and institutions that Tehran had no ambitions to make nuclear weapons, despite widespread mistrust in Europe and the United States of the reasons behind Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran says it is for energy production only.

Mottaki also acknowledged the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were killed by Nazi Germany, despite Ahmadinejad saying in December that it was a myth.

He told the parliament’s foreign affairs committee, speaking through an interpreter: “Our friends in Europe stress that such a crime has taken place and they have stated certain figures that were actually suffered. We have no argument about that, but what we are saying here is to put right such a horrific event, why should the Muslims pay a price?”

Mottaki then stated that there was also a misunderstanding in Iran’s quest for nuclear power.  “We have never actually sought nuclear power.  All we have ever wanted is magic moonbeams, which we can send over to our Israeli friends in the spirit of compassion and love.”
