Right Thinking From The Left Coast
The Government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them. - Mark Twain

Losing Another War
by Lee

In NRO, Ned Rice says it’s time to admit total defeat in the war.  On cancer.

How will history account for such a miserable failure of a war? Many would argue that we never should have gone to war with cancer in the first place. The very idea that American medical science could control a process as elemental as malignant cellular proliferation is emblematic of a type of hubris only Americans are capable of. Surely the notion that we could impose American values such as “benign” and “non-metastasizing” on living tissues will be remembered as pure, jingoistic folly.

But even conceding the necessity of this war on cancer is no excuse for the way in which it has been waged. Does anyone still deny that America embarked on this so-called war without a well-defined plan for achieving victory? To say nothing of an exit strategy. The mistakes and failures we’ve made along the way surely number in the thousands. One even gets the impression, at times, that the clinical research supposedly aimed at finding a cure is being done on a virtual trial and error basis.

Moreover, how exactly does one wage war on a disease? Or was the war analogy merely a cynical rhetorical device designed to trick red state dullards into supporting Nixon’s nefarious scheme to enrich his cronies in the medical-industrial complex? Pro-war voices are hard-pressed to even define victory in a war on cancer. Does “winning” mean no more malignancies, ever? What about skin cancer? When can we start smoking again, for Pete’s sake? The cancer-war hawks fall predictably silent when confronted with these uncomfortable realities. This war has been waged with an almost willful ignorance of the nature of the enemy we face. Remember laetrile, the miracle cancer cure extracted from apricot pits? Remember oatmeal’s putative preventative properties? The so-called cancer “vaccine”? All came to nothing.

Then there’s the unilateral aspect of the current struggle. Instead of enlisting the aid of trusted allies such as France and Germany to form a coalition of like-minded powers to fight this disease, we arbitrarily declared war on cancer like the arrogant superpower we are. Not even the United Nations was consulted, much less asked for its permission. No wonder the whole world hates us.

Read the whole thing.  Our arrogant hubris knows no bounds.

Party Time in Tehran
by Lee

When Bush said that “They hate us for our freedoms” he was roundly ridiculed by the left.  The thing is, of all the things Bush has ever said, in this case he was absolutely right.  The Islamists are terrified of our freedoms, because they know that as long as we exist and we are free we will provide an irresistible allure to their children through our popular culture, and they can’t have that.

IRAN’S police force outlined plans today for a renewed crackdown against women who show off too much of their bodies in the streets of Tehran.

“In our campaign, we will confront women showing their bare legs in short pants,” Tehran’s police chief, Morteza Talai, said.

“We are also going to combat women wearing skimpy headscarves, short and form-fitting coats, and the ones walking pets in parks and streets,” he said.

Also in police crosshairs are “the ones creating noise pollution” by playing their car stereos too loud.

Every post-pubescent female in Iran, regardless of her nationality or religion, is obliged to observe the Islamic dress code and cover her shape and hair whenever outside the home.

Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran’s ruling clerics have been at pains to keep women under wraps and away from the risk of “Westoxication”.

Gee, and the liberals wonder why some of us are so concerned with a society this rational acquiring nuclear weapons.

Shakin’ the Bay
by Lee

It was 100 years ago today that the Good Lord decided to smite San Francisco.

Sirens wailed through the city before dawn Tuesday to mark the moment 100 years earlier when the Great Quake struck, shattering the city and touching off fires that burned for days.

Eleven centenarians who survived the devastation were joined by thousands of spectators for a memorial ceremony to remember one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. …

Most of the city’s 400,000 residents were still in bed when the magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck at 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906.

The foreshock sent people scrambling, and the main shock arrived with such fury that it flattened crowded rooming houses. The epicenter was a few miles offshore of the city, but it was felt as far away as Oregon and Nevada. In 28 seconds, it brought down the City Hall it had taken 27 years to build.

From cracked chimneys, broken gas lines and toppled chemical tanks, fires broke out and swept across the city, burning for days. Ruptured water pipes left firefighters helpless, while families carrying what they could fled the advancing flames to parks that had become makeshift morgues.

Historians say city officials, eager to bring people and commerce back to the city, radically underestimated the death toll. Researchers are still trying to settle on a number, but reliable estimates put the loss above 3,000, and possibly as high as 6,000.

I dunno.  It seems to me that San Francisco could do with another really good smiting.

Smacka Cracka
by Lee

A gang of white guys runs a black guy over, and then while he’s pinned beneath the car they beat him senseless.  Hate crime, right?

That’s how Jeff Morris described the beating he witnessed early Thursday in the parking lot behind Cowboys 2000 nightclub in northeast Springfield.

Morris said a horde of men viciously kicked 22-year-old Joshua M. Mincks in the head as the bloodied Bolivar man lay motionless, pinned beneath a car.

Some of the attackers even celebrated after landing blows.

“They were actually enjoying this,” Morris said Thursday in a telephone interview. “They were giving high-fives after kicking him.”

Morris wasn’t sure what prompted the brutality, but images of the aftermath were still fresh in his mind Thursday afternoon.

“He was hard to recognize, there was so much blood on his face,” the Rogersville man recalled.

Springfield police spent much of Thursday investigating the assault but had made no arrests as of press time.

Officer Matt Brown, a police spokesman, said reporters asked him numerous times on Thursday whether the beating was racially motivated. The victim was white; witnesses said his attackers were black.

“At this point, we have not ruled out that possibility, but have not been able to confirm the reason for the assault and will not know until we have one or more of the suspects in custody,” he said in a release.

If the races had been reversed Je$$e Jack$on and his ambulance-chasing racist pals would have been on the first Gulfstream V to the scene.  As it is, this will get hardly a mention anywhere.  Because only whitey can be racist, right media?

Earlier this year I wrote a post about the power of lettre de cachet, and why giving this power to the president was something we really needed to do with our eyes wide open.  Here’s a perfect example of what I was talking about.

The Supreme Court won’t intervene in the odd case of two Chinese Muslims locked up by mistake at the Guantanamo Bay prison.

The men were accidentally captured as enemy combatants more than four years ago. And a judge has since ruled their detention isn’t legal, but the federal courts can’t help.

The administration doesn’t want to release them unless they leave the country, but Washington hasn’t been able to find a country to accept them. They can’t go back to China because they might be tortured or killed.

Even though the administration says they have access to rare Guantanamo luxuries like TV and soccer games, the detainees’ lawyers say their detention is still a hardship.

Four years in prison for something they didn’t do, and the court system is powerless to stop the government.  If you think America is well-served by giving this kind of unchecked power to the government there’s something seriously, seriously wrong with you.  One of the founding principles of this government was a system of checks and balances, and we have no checking or balancing here.  The president has assumed the power to imprison anyone he chooses, there is no recourse for the prisoner to get out of jail, and neither the courts nor legislature have any oversight.  That’s fucking scary.

Flat Tax Blues
by Lee

Some fucking numbnuts writing in my local dogturd scoop is actually arguing that the current tax code shows why a flat tax hurts the poor and helps those eeeeeeevil rich folks.

So what about the “fantastic growth waiting to burst forth”? Has leveling out federal income tax rates produced a cornucopia of financial benefits?

The answer is probably yes — if you’re a millionaire. And probably no — if you’re almost anyone else. Flattened, and thus lower, tax rates have contributed to huge increases in the wealth of the wealthy, but so far most people haven’t seen significant economic improvement.

Then there’s this.

Under Forbes’ largely forgotten flat-tax proposal, taxpayers would have paid 17% in taxes on all income beyond $36,000 a year, excluding pensions and profits from the sale of investments. The system was to be so simple, the candidate said, that most taxpayers would fill out a form the size of a postcard.

No such system was adopted or even seriously considered, but President Bush has achieved something close to the flat-rate structure by cutting tax rates on earned income and particularly on dividends and investment profits.

Aha!  Therein lies the rub.  Under any successful flat tax structure there are few to no deductions of any kind.  What we’ve got today is a tax structure which has been, as the author says, “flattened” in terms of the basic numbers, but which still has ten thousand different ways of gaming the system.  Since the poor, by virtue of their poverty, cannot afford to hire professional tax preparers, these loopholes will be primarily used by the more affluent.

Man, you really have to love the progressive tax to believe the line of bullshit in this article.

Help Me I Am In Hill
by Lee

I think I’m going to be violently ill.  Due to total Republican inaction and incompetence, the Hildebeast has staked out a new position on illegal immigration, and it’s pretty much exactly the same as mine.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is staking out a position on illegal immigration that is more conservative than President Bush, a strategy that supporters and detractors alike see as a way for the New York Democrat to shake the “liberal” label and appeal to traditionally Republican states.

Mrs. Clinton — who is tagged as a liberal because of her plan for nationalized health care and various remarks during her husband’s presidency — is taking an increasingly vocal and hard-line stance on an issue that ranks among the highest concerns for voters, particularly Republicans.

“Bush has done everything he can to leave the doors wide open,” said Robert Kunst, president of HillaryNow.com, a group dedicated to drafting Mrs. Clinton to run for president. “Hillary is the only one taking a position on immigration. She will win that issue hands down.”

In an interview last month on Fox News, Mrs. Clinton said she does not “think that we have protected our borders or our ports or provided our first responders with the resources they need, so we can do more and we can do better.”

In an interview on WABC radio, she said: “I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants.”

“Clearly, we have to make some tough decisions as a country, and one of them ought to be coming up with a much better entry-and-exit system so that if we’re going to let people in for the work that otherwise would not be done, let’s have a system that keeps track of them,” she said.

Unlike many pro-business Republicans, Mrs. Clinton also has castigated Americans for hiring illegal aliens.

“People have to stop employing illegal immigrants,” she said. “I mean, come up to Westchester, go to Suffolk and Nassau counties, stand on the street corners in Brooklyn or the Bronx. You’re going to see loads of people waiting to get picked up to go do yard work and construction work and domestic work.”

This just shows how easily a moderate leftie (or even a pretend moderate leftie like Hillary) can co-opt a huge chunk of the Republican agenda.  I mean, it used to be the GOP that was against illegal immigration on security issues and the Democrats who loved it because they’re bleeding heart morons.  But the Bush years have turned everything on its head, and a smart Democratic candidate is going to be able to capitalize on this total lack order on the right side of the aisle.

Ignoring the Problem
by Lee

One Italian newspaper has the balls to speak the truth about the kid-gloves way that everyone treats Islam these days, which immediately results in protests from all corners, thus proving its point.

A cartoon depicting Muhammed in hell has been published by an Italian magazine close to Opus Dei, bringing angry criticism from Muslim groups and disapproval from the Vatican.

The drawing in Studi cattolici takes its inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy, in which the 14th-century poet imagines being guided through hell by the Latin poet Virgil, and sees the prophet cut in two as his punishment for spreading division. In the cartoon, Virgil points out another figure to Dante, saying: “And that one there with his pants down, that’s Italian policy towards Islam.” The caption uses a play on words to suggest Italy has chickened out in its attitude to Muslims.

An Opus Dei spokesman said the magazine was not an official publication of the conservative Roman Catholic fellowship, and the edition had not been checked in advance. The spokesman said Opus Dei’s founder, St Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer (1902-75) “would have given up his life for the sake of respecting other people’s religious freedom”.

The Italian section of the World Muslim League said the cartoon was “in extremely bad taste”. Souad Sbai, a member of the Italian government’s Islamic consultative council, said: “This sort of provocation doesn’t get us anywhere.” The Vatican’s expert on Islam, Father Justo Lacunza Balda, deplored the cartoon: “This really doesn’t seem to me like the way towards dialogue and mutual understanding.”

This assumes, of course, that the Islamic world wants dialogue and mutual understanding, which I think is pretty obvious that they do not.

Just Say Mao
by Lee

I sure hope when I’ve been dead for 30 years I can still get a massive erection.

The Chinese authorities say they are putting up a huge statue of Chairman Mao Zedong in Tibet.

The 35-ton memorial is being built to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the former leader’s death.

It is being erected in Gonggar County, near the Tibetan capital Lhasa, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua said.

The statue will rise 7m from a 5m pedestal strengthened to withstand earthquakes. Mao Zedong ordered the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1950.

The statue will be the central landmark of Gonggar County’s Shangcha square, which covers about 40,000 sq metres, and is scheduled for completion in July.

According to the Beijing authorities, the statue of Mao Zedong will be the largest of its kind in China and the first in Tibet.

Now, if the Taliban want to blow up this statue, I won’t lose any sleep over it.

Fun On Campus II
by Lee

The other day I wrote a post about the way that liberals on college campuses view the right of freedom of speech.  In other words, they wan to ban any speech that they don’t happen to agree with.  Here’s another example.

A professor at Northern Kentucky University said she invited students in one of her classes to destroy an anti-abortion display on campus Wednesday evening.

NKU police are investigating the incident, in which 400 crosses were removed from the ground near University Center and thrown in trash cans. The crosses, meant to represent a cemetery for aborted fetuses, had been temporarily erected last weekend by a student Right to Life group with permission from NKU officials.

Public universities cannot ban such displays because they are a type of symbolic speech that has been protected by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Witnesses reported “a group of females of various ages” committing the vandalism about 5:30 p.m., said Dave Tobertge, administrative sergeant with the campus police.

Sally Jacobsen, a longtime professor in NKU’s literature and language department, said the display was dismantled by about nine students in one of her graduate-level classes.

“I did, outside of class during the break, invite students to express their freedom-of-speech rights to destroy the display if they wished to,” Jacobsen said.

That’s right, folks.  To liberals, freedom of speech involved unlesahing violence to stifle the peaceful speech rights of anyone who disagrees with you.  Perhaps I should exercise my free speech rights and kick this woman’s fucking teeth in.

Eggy-Weggies and Ultra Violence
by Lee

And it just wouldn’t be a holiday without those self-righteous dicks at PeTA trying to ruin it for everyone else.

Volunteers of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), an animal welfare organisation, on Thursday staged a demonstration, urging people to not to eat eggs this Easter.

Volunteers dressed as a hen, rooster and fluffy yellow chicks, urged people to give chickens something to celebrate this Easter by foregoing eggs.

The demonstrators carried placards, which said `Jesus Loves Me Too’ and `Thou shall not kill. Go veg.’

Roshni D’Silva of PeTA India, Mumbai, said a good number of Christians lived in the city of Chennai.

So, the organisation decided to appeal to the Christian community in the city to give up eating eggs.

Seriously, can you believe that there are actually grown men and women who dress up like fluffy little chicks to fucking protest eggs?

The Master Cat
by Lee

Let’s hear it for supercat!

A cat saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned on the doorstep of a Cologne house in the middle of the night by meowing loudly until someone woke up, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

“The cat is a hero,” Cologne police spokesman Uwe Beier said. “Its loud meowing got the attention of the homeowner and saved the baby from suffering life-threatening hypothermia. The homeowner opened door to see why the cat was making so much noise and discovered the newborn.”

Interestingly enough, an ancestor of this cat was involved in a similar incident in 1942.  As the Nazis were going door to door, rounding up Jews to be sent to the death camps, a small group of Jews hid inside a false wall in a basement.  The ancestral cat stood outside the wall meowing until the Nazis kicked it in, arrested the Jews, and sent them to their deaths in Auschwitz.

“Ja, zis is indeed un Wunderkatten,” remarked SS-Obersturmbanfuhrer Horst Gunterhausen.  “It has ein nose like un bloodhound for ze sniffing of der filthy Juden!”

Permanent Vacation
by Lee

Following up on this post from yesterday about the new American embassy in Iraq, I have some thoughts on why this is so damn important.  I think this is more a psychological thing than anything else.  Yes, there are some practical considerations like making it a defensible, self-contained center.  But consider this, from a PBS interview with Osama bin Laden in 1998.

After our victory in Afghanistan and the defeat of the oppressors who had killed millions of Muslims, the legend about the invincibility of the superpowers vanished. Our boys no longer viewed America as a superpower. So, when they left Afghanistan, they went to Somalia and prepared themselves carefully for a long war. They had thought that the Americans were like the Russians, so they trained and prepared. They were stunned when they discovered how low was the morale of the American soldier. America had entered with 30,000 soldiers in addition to thousands of soldiers from different countries in the world. ... As I said, our boys were shocked by the low morale of the American soldier and they realized that the American soldier was just a paper tiger. He was unable to endure the strikes that were dealt to his army, so he fled, and America had to stop all its bragging and all that noise it was making in the press after the Gulf War in which it destroyed the infrastructure and the milk and dairy industry that was vital for the infants and the children and the civilians and blew up dams which were necessary for the crops people grew to feed their families. Proud of this destruction, America assumed the titles of world leader and master of the new world order. After a few blows, it forgot all about those titles and rushed out of Somalia in shame and disgrace, dragging the bodies of its soldiers. America stopped calling itself world leader and master of the new world order, and its politicians realized that those titles were too big for them and that they were unworthy of them. I was in Sudan when this happened. I was very happy to learn of that great defeat that America suffered, so was every Muslim.

This is the impression that the Arab world has had of us for the past 30 years or so, that if they just fight back enough we will turn and run, that the US is a paper tiger.  Well, here in Baghdad we’re building a massive monument to show them that not only is the US not a paper tiger, but that we’re not leaving anytime soon, that we as a nation can withstand any low-level attacks that you might make against our soldiers and/or our interests, and that we have the ability to build the most modern, obviously-western structure in the country, big enough to dwarf some of Saddam’s palaces, and we can make it so that your bombs won’t be able to reach it.

From a psychological standpoint, that’s a hell of a message to be sending. It’s exactly the message we should be sending, that no matter how many short term tactical victories you may achieve, you will NEVER achieve your strategic goals.  “You fuckers had your chance at democracy, and you blew it.  You seem to only respond to strong leaders.  Alright, here you go.  You want a strong leader?  We’re the biggest, baddest, strongest fucking leaders in the world.  Try attacking this building, you pricks.  You can cut the water, you can cut the power, you can do whatever you like.  You’re not going to hurt us one bit, we’re self-contained.  The only thing you’re going to do is hurt the Iraqi people.  So hit us with your best shot, the only thing you’re going to do is make us look all the better.”

Bush might not do a lot of things right these days, but he’s absolutely right about this.

A History of Violence

Right-Thinking’s loyal and dedicated webmeister JimK emailed Comedy Central to tell them what a bunch of pussies they were for not showing Muhammad.  They responded with a form letter.

Gutless bastards.  Note to terrorists:  violence works.  Anyone in the west can be cowed into submission by burning a few cars.
