The Religion of Peace™ is doing it Hong Kong style.

Shouting slogans and waving banners, more than 1,000 Muslims in Hong Kong mounted a protest on Sunday to denounce cartoons lampooning the Prophet Mohammad.

“Mockery is not humour,” “We want peace, don’t harass us,” read some of the banners the Muslims brandished in Chater Garden, a favorite weekend gathering place for foreign domestic helpers.

It was the second peaceful protest in 10 days by Hong Kong’s Muslim community, a usually quiet and almost invisible group in this southern Chinese city.

Organisers said they were enraged by the cartoons, which were first published in Denmark in September but which have since been reprinted in many European newspapers.

“We love our prophets and we also love other religions. But why should people hate our religion?” said Khan Muhammad Malik, chairman of the Pakistan Islamic Welfare Union in Hong Kong.

“We want the United Nations to make a law for the world, stating clearly that no religion must be insulted.”

Strange, isn’t it, that we’ve never heard a peep from the Muslim world concerning the insulting of religion.  That is, until it was their religion that was insulted.  Then, well, of course, all religions need to be protected.  Which, when you think about it, makes them exactly like liberals.  Insulting Christianity?  No problem.  But when Muslims act like savages, well, all of a sudden we have to exercise restraint and be respectful of people’s religious beliefs.

Ah, the liberal double-standard.  You can only be racist if you’re white; only sexist if you’re male; only religiously intolerant if you’re Christian…

No religion must be insulted? I’m sure the Jews will be very gratified to hear that.

I’m a lib, and I recognize that everyone has the capability to be racist. However I also recognize that there is a certain double standard in whinging about it when white males, of which I am one (mostly), generally define social norms and control most of the high paying jobs and resources.

A double standard in whining about rank hypocrisy?  How, exactly?  Is that the same reasoning behind “Well, the rich have more money so they should be expected to pay a greater percentage than the rest of us, anyways”?

And control most of the high paying jobs and resources?  Why is that?  How so and why?

Are you saying they don’t???

No he is not saying they don’t.

He’s asking you why white males control “most of the high paying jobs and resources” and how they managed to do this.

I’m saying it, then. A reader posted something here just the other day about how some dimbulb was whining about how blacks only hold about 10-15% of the top management jobs, and this “proves” racism.

Never mind that blacks only make up about 12% of the population, who cares about the facts when you can make baseless accusations?

As far as women in the workplace, they have been shown to have chosen “alternate career paths”, and they whine about not being taken seriously.

Those who do the work get the benefits, and those who whine about being “excluded need to take a look at how well those people do who don’t let limitations affect them - such as Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Alberto Gonzalez, etc.

Their reward? To be insulted by those who have a stake in keeping the racial grievances alive to provide political horsepower (only to forget about the issues until the next election cycle). To be called “Oreos”, “Uncle Tom/Aunt Jemima”, and much worse, for no other reason than they prove the cycle of grievance doesn’t work.

Of course, it’s easier to blame Tha Man for Keeping Tha Brutha Dowan than actually getting off one’s ass and putting in a hard day’s work, over and over again for years at a time, but work provides more choices.

Well if you are after a general mechanism, I would say its through socialization - people at all levels believe in the hierarchy.

Have you ever heard about “beatiful student syndrome”? Students who are more attractive in some way receive more positive reinforcement from an early age, and are therefore much more likely to succeed. Speaking more generally, it starts in the cradle. What about the famous experiment where they took a baby out in the street in a pink jumpsuit, then a blue jumpsuit. People told the girl to be quiet “shhhh - aren’t you sweet?” while saying “Who’s a clever little boy, then?” and “aren’t you strong?” to the “blue” baby. It’s part of culture. Sure, some people are working to change it, but it’s slow.

I mean, you both agree that it happens, that white men do dominate at the top (at least that’s how I read your posts). Have you ever complained about a man getting a job over a more qualified woman? I hear plenty of complaining here about how white men are the victims of “affirmative action” and “social engineering” here, but it really doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference at the top, does it? Still plenty of men up there!

Montreal Muslim News: ’Western values a sickness’
We enjoy reading the Montreal Muslim News (MMN). It keeps us up to date with the latest looney tunes leftist/Islamic conspiracy theories ranging from deniying Muslim terrorists authored the 9/11 attacks to suggesting, hours after the London 7/7 bombings, that Zionists orchestrated the attacks. It’s also a site where one can learn there actually is an anti-Holocaust Museum petition circulating in Canada despite the fact no Holocaust Museum is being (as though such a project would merit opposition) built in this country, where calls on Muslims to boycott Jewish, sorry, “Zionist” politicians are made, or where one can read the latest press releases of radical Salafi movement Hizb ut-Tahrir
All the above notwithstanding, we were nonetheless surprised MMN would comment on a statement made by Australian Treasurer Peter Costello that Muslim immigrants should adapt to Australian values as follows:

Calling on Muslim (sic) to embrace western values, or in this case Australian values, is merely coded speech calling on us to leave our faith. For believing Muslims our set of values are based on the Quran and the noble example of the prophet Muhammad. If we look deeply into the sickness of what passes for “western values” one can see why we choose Allah over human made systems of morality and conduct.”

Have you ever complained about a man getting a job over a more qualified woman?

Yes. Except, in my xase it was the (clearly) less-qualified woman who got a promotion over me. In every objective criteria, I routinely wiped the floor with her - experience, sales quota, customer satisfaction, referrals, training.

Of course, the fact that she was sleeping with the boss didn’t hurt her chances.

That was when I quit (along with half of my staff), and went into business for myself.

Notice how the Hong Kong Muslims aren’t destroying embassies/property. Western civilization does that no?

What are you arguing here, that people tell little black babies “Awww, you’re going to be such a great gang member, listening to rap and drinking malt liquor from a paper bag”?

There’s no doubt that “social norms” cause some of these issues, but guess what? The people who set the social norms for children are *their parents*. It’s only when parents abandon their responsibilities that every fool the kid encounters becomes a surrogate parent figure.

Beautiful Student Syndrome - has anyone who whined about this actually thought it through?

1) Men who have lots of cash are generally smarter than average.
2) Cash = attractive women to sleep with.
3) The resulting children are both smarter and more attractive than average
4) Repeat

Of course attractive people do better - they are your genetic and intellectual superiors and most likely come from a background that stresses work and education (as that is how they got rich to begin with)

So the UN passes a law forbidding insulting religion in all member nations. Wouldn’t that benefit the Jews, what with all those nasty bits the Saudi, Iranian, etc state newspapers run?

I wonder if they realize what they’re getting in to…

Posted by chrisbg99 on 02/26/06 at 03:42 PM from United States

Does the UN even have the authority to make those kind of laws, much less even think about enforcing them?

Posted by on 02/26/06 at 04:23 PM from United States

The UN can’t pass a law like that which is binding.

Like they’d enforce if they could.

Under what authority does the UN pass laws?  Is this a joke?  Does anyone pay any attention to UN “laws”.

Yeah, they’re called, “whiny tree-hugging pussies.”
