Preschool Bull

I don’t know if you watched John Stossell’s ‘s “Bailouts and Bull” the other night.  For something that was quite hyped in Libertarian circles, I wasn’t that impressed, since it was a mainly a retreatment of Reason.tv’s better videos.  But I’m probably forgetting that not everyone watches more video on the internet than the boob tube.

Here was the one segment, however, that really struck a chord with me: the BS of universal pre-K:

Notice how when he goes after the pre-K advocates, pointing out that there is no proven sustained increase in IQ or overall student performance for kids that are in pre-K, they change the subject.  That is a dead giveaway that they know, deep down, that they’re full of it.

There’s the troubling matter that 70% of Americans support universal pre-K.  But I suspect this is because of the way the question is asked.  Most people, when you say universal pre-K, think of it as being like school vouchers—the Feds will help you pay for preschool.  In fact, my wife thought that’s what it meant.  If you rephrased the question as, “Should the feds take over the preschool system?”, I believe the answer would be a thunderous “No!”

I’ve had no problem—in Texas, Pennsylvania or any of the places I considered moving—in finding a good preschool, including many that would subsidize rates for needy parents.  That can’t be said of, say, a good elementary school.

Further thoughts on this subject in one my favorite posts here.

That’s because 70% of Americans are too fucking lazy to raise their own kids. Universal pre-K is just another way for the nation’s parents to slough off their responsibilities to their children on the state.

I watched it last night, and quite honestly, these people know that they are full of shit.  They just want the department of education to take over 100% of the nation’s educational system, and this is just the next logical step.

Considering that ever since the DOE was created the general quality of public education has gone straight to the shitter, the obvious thing to do is eliminate private education in all forms so nobody will be able to “cheat” and get a non-standard, government-issue education.

This is a way to solve a big chunk of the daycare problem.  Halfway decent daycare is wicked expensive, so send them to school earlier and earlier.
I agree with Heartless, raise your friggin’ kids already.
