Right Thinking From The Left Coast

Remember those promises of transparent government back during the election cycle?

Well, I think we can clearly state they were bullshitting us, and doing so hard. The stories, despite the MSM’s lack of interest, are numerous and paint a frightening picture of incompetence and plain old fashioned tyrannical abuse. We have the latest revelation about how Janet Napolitano’s DHS machine has completely politicized and corrupted the FOIA request process, turning it into a political exercise as to who gets access or not, with partisan political employees attempting to steal evidence - under ridiculous pretenses nevertheless - and even tampering with the process and witnesses in an attempt to conceal their clearly objectionable partisan behavior. DHS’s response?

A key congressional committee on oversight is accusing the Department of Homeland Security of non-cooperation, witness tampering and even attempted theft of committee documents. The 152-page report comes on the eve of hearings on transparency about DHS by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The accusations were met with a swift condemnation from a DHS spokesman, who accused Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., of reaching conclusions before the hearing got under way.‬ ‪"While the Committee’s report spends a good deal of space making allegations of politicization and obstruction, the facts simply do not support these claims. Ironically, the report itself is full of selective omissions and redactions that appear to have been made to support these allegations,"‬ said DHS spokesman Amy Kudwa.

Neener-neener! You can a copy of the report here, and it is damning to DHS. It’s a good thing that Issa is demanding answers after these revelations of partisan corruption cum ineptness. And despite their effort to minimize the significance of the behavior at DHS, even hard core leftists have to point out how ludicrous the claims of transparency come across as, when people are removed for clear political reasons that back the claims they have politicized the FOIA process.

In the middle of Sunshine Week promoting transparency in government, open-government advocates say the apparent demotion of a high-level Department of Homeland Security employee for whistle-blowing is particularly dark. “Our government is sending the message to federal workers that they do not want them to come forward and report these problems,” Dave Colapinto, the general counsel of the National Whisteblowers Center, told AOL News today by phone. “In other words, they do not want the public to know what is going on.”

According to The Associated Press, the Department of Homeland Security demoted a high-level employee because she told the inspector general that requests for federal records were being unduly influenced and sometimes illegally shelved by political appointees. In a strongly worded letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano obtained by the AP, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., charges that the federal agency demoted Catherine Papoi, a former deputy unit chief of Freedom of Information Act requests, as an apparent “act of retaliation” against her for whistle-blowing. FOIA requests are filed by government watchdog groups and news organizations in order to gain access to federal records for the public.

Keep in mind that this employee is not a political appointee, but a long term FOIA expert that has been doing this for a long time. And despite the left’s attempt to say that it is so, he is not being demoted for dong a bad job: he is being demoted for pointing out how rife the political corruption at DHS is. And DHS’s shenanigans and clear political gate keeping around FOIA requests isn’t the only problem, as DHS’s behavior on illegal immigration also shows. Not to mention the fact that Napolitano has repeatedly told us that our problem isn’t Muslim radicals, but those damned right wing haters!

This administration is rife with instance after instance of purely politically motivated behavior and an equal amount of craven, blatant moves to cover up those facts. The only thing blatantly obvious is how transparent their attempts to cover up their constant attempts to hide the truth and pretend they are still being transparent to the people are. This stuff would make the usual lefty tyrants proud in how Machiavellian their behavior has been. Unfortunately for them the lack of interest from their buddies in the MSM has not been enough to keep the American people from finding out what’s going on there. I know this is getting old now, but we need to do it: Can you imagine the response if this was done by a republican administration? Yeah, I thought so.

I was really hoping this was a joke. An April fools thing when I saw it. It’s why I left it out. Well also maybe to pummel Muirgy with it when he come on to argue that this was all a big conspiracy. I understad the need for government to keep some things hidden, but I am not stupid enough to see that the pattern here is totally political. And that doesn’t speak well of the people in power.
