Right Thinking From The Left Coast
The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it - Henry David Thoreau

Sometimes It’s Called a Slippery Slope…

...because that’s exactly what it is.

The next step in tightened security could be on U.S. public transportation, trains and boats.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says terrorists will continue to look for U.S. vulnerabilities, making tighter security standards necessary.

“[Terrorists] are going to continue to probe the system and try to find a way through,” Napolitano said in an interview that aired Monday night on “Charlie Rose.”

“I think the tighter we get on aviation, we have to also be thinking now about going on to mass transit or to trains or maritime. So, what do we need to be doing to strengthen our protections there?”

Oh come on, like you really didn’t expect this?  Maybe the Obama administration can maintain some goodwill amongst left-wing urban hipsters by promising, “cross their heart and hope to die,” that they’ll be sure to take light rail off that list.

The Hill, of course, made sure to run cover for their Bestest Friend:

Editor’s note: This story and its headline have been clarified to show that the Department of Homeland Security has not indicated it plans to use body scanners to tighten security at transportation sites beyond airports.

Yeah, sure, fellas.  That’s why the head of the Department of Homeland Security stated flat out that they “have to be thinking” about extending tighter security measures to these transportation venues.  “Oh gee, gentle readers, this was just a thought experiment!  They’re not REALLY serious about this!”

This crap comes on top of a laundry list of snide editorials on this subject in our nation’s fine birdcage liners last week.  Matt Welch at The Best Magazine in the World took the time to compile them here and here.  Some choice ones to add to your turkey and pumpkin pie-induced heartburn, full of false dilemmas, appeals to authority, and good old-fashioned juvenile taunting:

Sacramento Bee:

Would you rather board a flight with all passengers fully screened, or one for which they haven’t? (note:Hmm, didn’t one of our commenters say this very thing a few days ago?) If they’re honest about it, the answer is obvious to even the most ardent civil libertarians.

Baltimore Sun:

Whatever happened to the notion that we need to stick together to overcome extremists? U.S. soldiers are still dying for that cause in Iraq and Afghanistan on a regular basis. Under the circumstances, it seems a small sacrifice for the citizens back home to keep a stiff upper lip and voluntarily agree to measures that experts believe are needed

Louisville Courier-Journal:

At what point did Americans turn into a nation of crybabies?

Santa Fe New Mexican:

B-b-but even if it isn’t the indecency of it all, it’s the principle of the thing, comes the bellowing from the would-be offendees. Well, yes — so, for the moment, you can stand, or bend over, on principle and suffer attendant indignities.

The Los Angeles Times, bless their hearts, don’t even bother trying to be clever; nothing but fascist authoritarianism will do for their readers:

Shut up and be scanned (Yep, that’s the actual title of their editorial.)

The cover that the media is providing the Obama administration on this is a fascinating case study in how political loyalties trump civic principles, particularly ones that are so directly tied to the fundamental freedoms explicitly outlined in the Bill of Rights.  No way in HELL would these assclowns be defending this shit if Dubya was still swaggering in the Oval Office.  But because it’s Captain Wonderful in charge now, it’s time to circle the wagons and deflect criticism from their Bestest Buddy; see this odious piece by Eugene Robinson for just one of many examples.

Keep these condescending remarks by the media in mind for all future issues they choose to comment on--absolutely nothing epitomizes their real opinions about Americans, and the spirit of the laws the country was founded upon, better than the hackery they’ve displayed in defending the TSA.

At this rate you’ll need travel papers to use the highways within a decade.  Expect it to first manifest by permanent checkpoints being established where rest stops and truck weight stations currently exist.

I’m sure that they’ll have some meaningless blather about how the roads could be targeted and “honest people choose to fly, only criminals try to avoid being screened”, and perhaps “you could always just walk"…

It won’t be papers. It’ll be an automated GPS system installed in your car. I believe Washington State is already looking at such a system to tax you per mile you drive. Expect such a system to go national. They will attempt to placate us at first by assuring us that law enforcement can’t access the system. This will be a lie of course. After a few years of big brother riding shotgun it will just become a fact of life.

Hey, I have an idea! How about we set up surveillance cameras in all private residences. After all, you shouldn’t object unless you have something to hide. You need not worry about privacy since the Home Screeners will be federal employees. As you all know, Federal employees are above reproach. Your government also assures you that any image of your residence cannot be copied or printed. Furthermore, your government assures you they will have a zero tolerance policy on copying images and will fire anyone who attempts to break these guidelines (of course any accusation of abuse will have to be investigated by the newly formed TSA/Home Screeners Union. We can’t have any unjust firings after all). This is for your own good after all. Just think, if you slip in your bathtub and hit your head your friendly neighborhood Federal Home Screener can immediately send paramedics. If you’re the victim of a home invasion, police can immediately be dispatched and a full video recording of the home invasion will be available for local prosecutors to punish the perpetrators. If someone in your neighborhood is using illegal drugs, law enforcement will be immediately notified. If someone owns an illegal handgun, law enforcement will know. In fact with these new surveillance cameras you won’t even need to own a firearm. It would be best if you just got rid of your private firearms. If your Federal Home Screener sees you with one, even if it’s legal, he or she may misunderstand and send the police to your home to investigate. Now you don’t have to do this. This is still America after all. You have the option to opt out if you want to. Of course if you choose to opt out you, your family, and your home will be subject to random searches by law enforcement. This is for your own safety. To not have Home Surveillance is to invite a home invasion by evil criminal thugs who will rape your wife and daughters and kill you. To have no Federal Home Screener to watch over you is to invite a serious accident. You will slip in your own bathtub, crack your skull open, and bleed to death!

Oregon is the state that started that, but every state is probably looking to it.  Consider this the government bails out GM, the company with OnStar.

My bad.

The fact that these fascist bastards don’t even bother to give lip service to your rights any longer is most telling.  We have truly gotten to the point where the liberal elites no longer hide their contempt of the general population.

The feeling is mutual.

Yep, those Federal employees are certainly above reproach.
