On This Spot In 1989, Nothing Happened

Twenty years ago today, the Chinese government killed—as far as we can tell—a couple thousand of its own people for the crime of peacefully demanding reform of their authoritarian government.  At the time, it seemed like this was part of a wave of anti-Communist protests that was sweeping the world and tumbling empires.  The Chinese government survived and remains powerful, but I like to think that what progress they have made has been an indirect result of the explosion of dissent.
