Want to see stupid?

As an engineer, I had me one heck of a laugh at this article about the operational costs of the Chevy Volt. Here’s the nifty thing:

During its time with us, our 2011 Chevy Volt tester consumed energy at the rate of 39.0 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles when in electric-only mode and averaged 31.1 mpg in gas engine assistance mode. We paid an average of $0.31 per kilowatt-hour of electricity and $3.31 per gallon of 91 octane swill, so the magic of arithmetic tells us that each one of the Volt’s miles driven on electricity cost us more money than if it’d simply consumed gasoline instead. That’s due in part to our high electricity rate - had our rate dropped to $0.24 per kilowatt-hour, we’d have reached parity on a cost-per-mile basis between electrons and dinosaurs.

This test was done in California, one of the states pushing these stupid green technologies, no matter the cost or consequences, where both the cost of gas and electricity are sky high. Notice how that 91 octane stuff – gas - is swill, despite the fact that such a huge percentage of that electricity they would like so much to replace it with, especially in California were the stuff way too often comes from some other state anyway, is generated by burning more or less that swill they so hate. Delusional people apparently don’t have much problem pretending that electricity is magically created.

So then what’s the conclusion that electric vehicles are not going to save you any money really compared to gas powered ones? Especially when you ignore all the other costs an electric vehicle has compared to a combustion engine one, and focus on only the things that allow you to claim victory…

It should be mentioned that the base rate for electricity in the Volt’s early roll-out states is $0.16 per kilowatt-hour and many areas of the nation charge significantly less than that. So, we’re still going to assume e-miles are cheaper than gas ones, but we do know this is not always the case.

Some states still have cheap electric rates, so we will ignore the facts, and continue to push the meme that electricity is cheaper! And that will stay so even when these very same people pushing this green technology crap to save Gaia manage to ban electricity generation by burning evil oil or more evil coal, and the price per kilowatt is jacked up everywhere else too, I am sure.

I can’t help but make fun of these people when you hear that despite big government dollars demand for wind energy compared to capacity is down, and the same is happening for solar. Can you imagine without? If we want reliable energy we are going to have to keep doing what we do or get more nukes. The rest is just fluff. Doubly so when corporate America does stuff like this because it gets breaks subsidized by tax payer money from government. At least it’s not some foreign government begging for cash, though.
