Right Thinking From The Left Coast

Who would’ve thunk it?

Well, as many of us predicted would happen, and every leftist for the plan vehemently denied would, Obamacare is going to cause our premiums to go up. It wasn’t as if the government suddenly forcing private insurers to offer more coverage options and cover more people was going to somehow magically result in the same cost, let alone a cost reduction, but liberals are never bothered with reality when they think they are doing a good thing (or otherwise I should add). And so now we find out the following:

Health insurers say they plan to raise premiums for some Americans as a direct result of the health overhaul in coming weeks, complicating Democrats’ efforts to trumpet their signature achievement before the midterm elections. Aetna Inc., some BlueCross BlueShield plans and other smaller carriers have asked for premium increases of between 1% and 9% to pay for extra benefits required under the law, according to filings with state regulators. These and other insurers say Congress’s landmark refashioning of U.S. health coverage, which passed in March after a brutal fight, is causing them to pass on more costs to consumers than Democrats predicted.

The rate increases largely apply to policies for individuals and small businesses and don’t include people covered by a big employer or Medicare. About 9% of Americans buy coverage through the individual market, according to the Census Bureau, and roughly one-fifth of people who get coverage through their employer work at companies with 50 or fewer employees, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. People in both groups are likely to feel the effects of the proposed increases, even as they see new benefits under the law, such as the elimination of lifetime and certain annual coverage caps.

Now you can argue that this impacts only 9% of insured people, but that’s still more than the promise nobody was going to have their costs go up but the super rich on Cadillac plans, a substantial number of Americans based on what Obamacare considers such a plan, which are not yet part of the people affected by this increase I should add. And it doesn’t end there either:

Many carriers also are seeking additional rate increases that they say they need to cover rising medical costs. As a result, some consumers could face total premium increases of more than 20%.

That sounds to me like we all are facing hikes. In fact, my employer already communicated this to me and let me know there will be a substantial hike in my healthcare premiums when the new enrolment period comes around at the end of November. Oh, I am sure the average lefty will tell you that you are excluded from such a hike, but that’s all bogus too.

While the increases apply mostly to the new policies insurers write after Oct. 1, consumers could be subject to the higher rates if they modify their existing plans and cause them to lose grandfathered status.

Plans change every year. Mine have since I started buying health insurance close to 20 years ago. It happens for everyone covered as plans have to change to deal with new legal requirements passed by you know who. So guess what? The truth is we are all going to see our plans change and thus pay more for it. And I am not even going to bother pointing out how the associated costs being bandied about for Obamacare are seriously flawed, rigged to drastically hide the actual costs, with such gimmicks as the collection of taxes, up front for 4 or 5 years, for coverage during the last few years of that arbitrary 10 year window the demcorats concocted. That accounting gimmick alone sets the plan in the red to the tune of more than a trillion dollars, likely three times as much if you go by how bad government has been at estimating the real costs, over the next decade, as soon as year eleven rolls in.

Think the deficit spending is bad now? Think those evil insurers denying you whatever you want is bad now? How about the quality of care you get? Here is a prediction: The deficit spending will skyrocket to numbers that make the flakes doing it now look like pikers, government drones denying everything – or simply putting you on that 24 month waiting list when you will die in less time without immediate action - will make insurance companies look like saints, and the quality of your care will be just north of that given to the average Cuban citizen. Enjoy Obamacare! Or not. Don’t worry, big government proponents are taking action! Not sure what’s worse. The shafting we got from Obamacare, or the fact that our government is using its power to silence those pointing out the problems and consequences of government takeover of healthcare. November can’t get here fast enough.
